Interview Guidance for Indian Engineering Services (Electrical Engineering)

Important Tips

I myself appeared for the interview of ESE 2012 so i want to share few important things . First of all it may say personality test but don’t get confused it is still hard core technical interview. My first mistake was thinking that they have enough idea about my technical knowledge since i have cracked two rounds of objective and written examination and not preparing about technical topics. I am going to discuss about the technical topics but lets talk about non technical stuff first. I think the most important think they seek is integrity . Never write anything on your detailed application form which you are not sure about , just to fill the space or make it attractive. I randomly wrote that i participated in GK quiz competitions at school level and very tough GK questions were fired at me even though i wrote school level. About your appearance , you should wear a light shirt with dark trousers and tie is optional, wear it only if you are comfortable with it. Arrive early at the place of interview to prevent any panic situation. Make sure you have all the documents and if you are missing any document ask the commission a day earlier and make sure you can proceed with the interview by providing them undertaking. Be cool in the interview but don’t be rude. This is a very classic rule to perform well in any interview. If you don’t know the answer tell them you don’t know but also give the probable answer you may think of. This way it wont look you are guessing and there will not be awkward silence of not knowing the answer. It will also reflect your thought process. But if you don’t have the slightest idea , don’t go for it. Like if they ask swing equation which is related to power system, don’t imply that it has to do something with newton’s third law of motion.

Now let us discuss few technical things. If you are a working professional from some PSU , please make sure you have the idea about the latest technology related to your field or latest unit in your organisation. It may not be strange that some higher official of your organisation is sitting in the board of interviews. In my interview i faced the ex chairman of Steel Authority Of India Ltd . If you are a fresher make sure you have brushed up all your industrial tours , training and the most important of all , your project. During technical interview you should steer the interview according to your strengths. It may sound funny that you should steer but its true. You decide the course of your interview. Always try to include the words in your answers of which you have comprehensive knowledge. Word chosen should have some area around it where you can venture safely. For example if you say ELCB (earth leakage circuit breaker) , make sure you know about RCCB, MCB, MCCB and other protection devices. If you are good in machines try to steer the interviewers towards it. Its very common for any body to ask questions by picking words from your answers. If you like machines try to have some training or project in this field. If you like motors specifically try to say i learnt about motor protection or motor starters during my training , project, industrial excursion, etc. I have almost appeared in 12 interviews till now and i have never attended any interview guidance program by any coaching. So i would really like to share my experience. You can reach out to me personally through my email. Below i am giving some imp questions that may be asked. Always be aware of the latest technology in switchgear and protection, energy conservation, clean energy, green energy , etc.
